MSA ANNOUCES IMPLEMENTATION OF RULE CHANGE FOR HEADING

Mississippi Soccer Association has announced the immediate implementation of rule changes in accordance with U.S. Soccer’s concussion initiative. This will impact players in the U11 and below single year age groups and the U12 and below two year age groups. These players can no longer deliberately head the ball.

The rule will be applied as follows:

When a player deliberately heads the ball in a game, an indirect free kick (IFK) should be awarded to the opposing team from the spot of the offense.  If the deliberate header occurs within the goal area, the indirect free kick should be taken on the goal area line parallel to the goal line at the point nearest to where the infringement occurred. If a player does not deliberately head the ball, then play should continue.

MSA and Referee administrators will be attending separate national meetings during the next couple of weeks where there will be further discussions with U.S. Soccer staff members for clarification on certain matters. An update to all MSA members will be provided at that time.
