MS ODP Boys 1994 Go 3 and 1 in Dallas Sub-Regional Event
Mississippi’s 1994 ODP Boys team recently participated in the sub-regional ODP event in Dallas/Plano Texas.  The team faced fierce competition, in extremely hot temperatures, from other ODP teams from Region III such as North Texas # 1, South Texas # 1, North Texas #3, and Oklahoma # 1.

The first game was against the # 1 team from North Texas and was played Friday night, which was a traveling day for the Mississippi team.  Both teams played very strong early on and late in the first half, Chino Gonzalez pushed a through ball to Marlon Hairston who found the back of the net for Mississippi’s only score in the game.  The North Texas team proved to be an extremely talented and formidable opponent scoring five goals during the rest of the game, giving Mississippi its only loss of the weekend.

The second game was played Saturday at 12:00 noon during 100 plus degree temperatures and Mississippi faced a strong South Texas # 1 team.  Mississippi moved the ball around very well and waited for the good opportunities.  Marcus Epps found an open shot just outside the 18 and nailed it for Mississippi’s first score of the game. Later in the 2nd half, South Texas pushed one through to tie but Kellen Gulley’s blast to the corner of the net on an assist by Preston Bell rounded out the scoring to give Mississippi its first victory of the weekend, defeating South Texas, 2 to 1.

The third game, played Saturday afternoon, was against  North Texas # 3.  This game gave many of the Mississippi players the chance to “show their stuff” and the Region III evaluators got good looks of all.  The “up top” boys for Mississippi really poured it on in this match with Kellen Gulley scoring 2 goals and Ed William getting a hat trick (3 goals) with assists from both Marlon Hairston and Marcus Epps.  Defensively, I’ve Burnett, Corey Carter and Nathan Usry, along with goalkeepers, Matthew O’Neal and Ben Schaefer, who each played a half, did not allow North Texas any real scoring opportunities.  Additional support and strength was provided in the middle of the field by Elijah Troutman, Chino Gonzalez, Cody Hood and Hudson Bean. Also, good efforts by Paul Assad and Luke Mason up top and Sina Mofidi and A.J. Arnold in the back completed the play and the match ended with a 5 to 0 shutout in Mississippi’s favor.

The fourth and final game of the weekend was played on Sunday morning at 8:00 and was against Oklahoma # 1.  Again, the Mississippi team showed its strengths and abilities in moving the ball around well during the whole match which proved to be too much for Oklahoma.

Marcus Epps had a good finish early for the first goal.  Later, in the 2nd half, Zahir Bracey took the ball down the right side of the field, unassisted, and had a good finish on the keeper to make it 2 to 0.  Later in the match Oklahoma had a chance to score when their striker broke loose from the pack but Nathan Usry had a come from behind slide tackle save in the box to prevent the goal.  Shortly after that, an unintentional hand ball in the box by Mississippi allowed Oklahoma a scoring opportunity, which they capitalized on, scoring on the pk, making the final score of the match, 2 to 1, Mississippi.

The Dallas event proved to be an excellent opportunity for the Mississippi team to “gear up” for Region III Camp which they will attend July 13th through the 17th in Starkville, Mississippi.  And, it also provided the Region III coaches/evaluators a chance to get an early look at some of the outstanding players on this team.  This group is coached extremely well by Cecil Hinds and Eric Kump.
